Vega Rio Palmas

Vega Rio Palmas

The “gavias” (water collectors) of la Vega de Rio Palmas are well known and widely use in Fuerteventura from aborigen’s time. The area of the valley, described by the conquerors at XV’s century was comparatively greener than the rest of the island, which is especially dry.

Today, the “gavias” are abandoned and lush is absent.

It is the aim of the proposal to recover the natural value of the area through making use of traditional knowledge, research and the implementation of new solutions on water management to revive activity around the “gavias”.

The objective is to create a virtuous circle, emphasizing sustainability and ecology in a wide spectrum. Alternative tourism models are feasible and they may be integrated with academic development and practice to guarantee its territorial imbrication.
