Casa Roja

Casa Roja

This renovation for Casa Roja on the Tafira Campus of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria aims to maximize the building's energy efficiency while preserving its historical heritage.

The traditional 17th-century Canarian courtyard house, is designed in an

L-shape with a central patio, that provided natural ventilation, climate stability, and space for daily activities. Historically, such patios served as gathering places for family life, craftsmanship, and hospitality, reflecting both functional and representative significance in Canarian rural architecture.

The proposal aims to study two different approaches.
1: ESENCIAL

A sustainable intervention prioritizing active measures to enhance energy efficiency. This approach includes solar panels, aerothermal heating, and roof insulation, leading to reduction in non-renewable energy consumption. Minimal yet impactful, this option ensures a long-term, energy-conscious restoration.

2: AVANZADA

A more advanced approach integrating passive strategies and architectural improvements. With a focus on reducing the urban heat island effect, enhancing natural ventilation, and creating a climate-conscious community space, this proposal promotes environmental and social sustainability. The design features green facades, greywater reuse, and a new multipurpose space, improving comfort while reducing energy and water consumption.
